The Urban Minority Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Outreach Program of Franklin County Inc. (UMADAOPFC) is designed to deliver Alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) prevention services to the African American community in Franklin County. The agency uses a culturally specific approach to delivering direct services to our target population as well as advocating for their needs. UMADAOPFC uses evidenced based prevention for African Americans, which offers a theoretical approach that gives focus, and direction for programming and at the same time allows for creativity.

Program Highlights

The After School program - UMADAOPFC creates a community within the larger Columbus community where customers can socialize and grow academically, intellectually and develop strong social skills. UMADAOPFC provides After School programs in Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority communities. Programs provide tutorial, educational enhancement, and ATOD prevention services to customers from third to twelfth grade. UMADAOPFC works to impact the individual customer's protective factors. Our programming is designed to help customers become resilient by building positive pro-social behavior, strong social skills, problem solving and thinking skills, a strong value system, positive sense of self, the ability to deal with crisis, and hope to overcome obstacles to achieve a successful drug-free life.

In addition, UMADAOPFC believes of the importance of impacting areas that are external to the customer but have a great impact on their ability to lead a healthy life. Programming builds relationships with the parents of the youth we serve, assisting them in strengthening their individual protective factors, increase their parenting skills, and assist them with finding additional resources to meet the needs of their family. UMADAOPFC believes that parents should have high expectations for their children and set up a family environment in accordance with that belief.

The In-School Program – is designed to provide culturally specific education, which builds on customers' self-image, critical thinking and social skills. Our goal is to help youth perform better in school, and build a healthy drug-free social network. We also encourage youth to become involved in After School and our Summer Youth programming.

The Summer Youth Program – provides age specific programming designed to help youth develop an interest in learning, a devotion to self-development, and a strong commitment to community development. Youth learn how to creatively communicate a drug free message. The academic component helps youth to enjoy learning while becoming more comfortable and focused in learning environments. We also provide several recreational activities and classes on diverse subjects from chess to dance.

Training -UMADAOPFC provides prevention training for social service agencies, schools, and community based organizations, and others as requested. Our training is designed specifically for each groups needs and is designed to enhance the skill development of customers. Our goal is to increase the amount of quality prevention programming for youth in Franklin County.
